Markers of Evil

How are human beings to understand evil? More to the point, what are they to do to prevent it, especially that form of evil that the world community declared in 1948 would never happen again – genocide?

The context for this declaration (The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide) was, of course, the Holocaust engineered and carried out by Nazi Germany. The declaration itself made use of a new word – genocide – that had not existed before, although the actions that would eventually result in the invention of this term had (see Power, 2002, chapter 1, and Hochschild, 1998).
